Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies. It tells the story of two young lovers from feuding families who fall in love at first sight. Despite the obstacles they face, they are determined to be together. However, their love is doomed from the start, and they both end up dead.

Here is a plain and simple English translation of one of the most famous scenes from Romeo and Juliet:

Romeo: But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.

Juliet: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I'll no longer be a Capulet.

Hamlet

Hamlet is another one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies. It tells the story of a young prince who is haunted by the ghost of his father. The ghost tells Hamlet that he was murdered by his own brother, Claudius, who has now married Hamlet's mother. Hamlet is torn between his desire for revenge and his fear of the consequences.

Here is a plain and simple English translation of one of the most famous soliloquies from Hamlet:

Hamlet: To be or not to be, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them?

Macbeth

Macbeth is a tragedy about a Scottish general who is driven to murder by his ambition. Macbeth is a brave and successful warrior, but he is also ambitious and ruthless. When he hears a prophecy that he will one day be king, he becomes obsessed with power. He murders King Duncan and seizes the throne, but his guilt and paranoia soon get the better of him.

Here is a plain and simple English translation of one of the most famous speeches from Macbeth:

Macbeth: Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee: I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.

Sonnets

In addition to his plays, Shakespeare also wrote a number of sonnets. Sonnets are 14-line poems that typically explore themes of love, beauty, and mortality. Here is a plain and simple English translation of one of Shakespeare's most famous sonnets:

Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date:

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm'd; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest; Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest:

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
