Plot

The play opens in the aftermath of the English Civil War. Charles I has been captured by the Parliamentarians and is imprisoned in the Tower of London. His loyalists, led by the Earl of Ormond, plot to rescue him, but their plans are betrayed by the Earl of Pembroke. Charles is executed, and the Parliamentarians establish a republic.

The second act takes place several years later. The republic is in disarray, and the people are longing for a return of the monarchy. Charles II, the son of Charles I, invades England with an army of Scots. He is defeated by the Parliamentarians, but he manages to escape to France.

The third act takes place in France. Charles II is living in exile, plotting to regain the English throne. He is joined by the Earl of Rochester, a former Parliamentarian who has become disillusioned with the republic. Together, they plan an invasion of England.

The fourth act takes place in England. Charles II and his army have landed in England and are marching on London. The Parliamentarians are defeated, and Charles II is crowned king.
